Runs coming Aug. 17
Featuring a half-marathon, a 10-kilometer and 5K events, the Volcano Rain Forest Runs will be held Aug. 17 at 4,000 feet above sea level just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The 5K and 10K events weave through the lush native forest on the mostly flat roads of Volcano Village, while the half-marathon course continues into the hills of the surrounding ranch lands. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:30 a.m.
The entry fees through Wednesday are: half-marathon ($75), 10K ($45), 5K ($30); starting Aug. 1: half-marathon ($85), 10K ($50) and 5K ($35).
Online registration at rainforestruns.com continues through Aug. 14, and packet pickup and late registration will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus or from 5:30-7 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Cooper Center. There is no race-day registration for the half-marathon and registration for the other races closes at 7 a.m.
Runners and their guests are invited to a luncheon from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 16 at VAC’s Niaulani Campus featuring complimentary pupus and wine, and a carbo-loading dinner will be held from 5–7 p.m. at the Cooper Center. Cost is $15 per person and $8.50 for children under 10. Call Donna Stickel (967-7800) for more information on the dinner.
Race registration is also available at VAC’s Niaulani Campus, and volunteers are still needed for set up, clean up, poster distribution, safety, course direction, parking assistance on event day, staffing booths and more.

Hilo volleyball
leagues are forming
Team entries are being accepted for a Parks and Recreation age group volleyball league for boys and girls in Hilo.
Divisions are 8-10 years old, 12 and under, and 14 and under, and an organizational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 10 at Aunty Sally’s Luau House.
The season is starting earlier than previous years, and the deadline to enter to be included on the first schedule is Aug. 23.

Ohana fishing events
still taking sign-ups
The deadline to participate in the 17th Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament has been extended to Aug. 2.
The tournament, sponsored by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, is scheduled Aug. 16-18.
Starting time for the tournament is 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 along Big Island shorelines. The final weigh-in will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the P&R Honokaa Gym.
There are six divisions (includes entry fee): men’s (18 and over), $25; women’s (18-over), $25; teen (ages 13-17), $20; children (ages 5-12), $20; kupuna (55-over), $20; and ohana ($20/team). Entrants can enter only one division plus the Ohana division if they have a team.
Registration forms are still available at all P&R facilities, gyms and aquatic pools as well as S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo and J. Hara Store in Kurtistown. Entry forms and payment must be postmarked by Aug. 2 and mailed to Recreation Division Office, Attn: Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament, 799 Piilani St., Hilo, HI. 96720.

The inaugural Waimea sports expo/family fun day will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at Waimea Park.
There will be instructional sports clinics, mild-competitive games, fitness demos, a home run derby and more.
